An inspiring story about light in a dark time, about one girl who accompanies her blind father to the workshop where he works in making brushes and brooms, and is given a pair of seeing eyes. There are dancing brooms and brushes and a magic wand in this book, and one man, his name is Otto Veidt, who saw the other when no one around him did.

The story was inspired by a real place, a workshop for the blind that operated in Berlin in the 1940s. Otto Veidt, the owner of the workshop, gave shelter to his workers and was recognized as a follower of the nations of the world. One of the workers in the workshop, Siegfried (Ziggy) Levin, was the uncle of the grandmother of the author of the book, Hadas Leibovitch.

Alice, the heroine of the book, contributes a child's perspective on this painful period. Her mature role does not prevent her from comforting herself by playing games with her father and dreaming dreams in which she gives free rein to her imagination and soars with him to better days.
