A free society is a moral achievement... The existence of social freedom is not enough in a market economy and a democratic-liberal state. It requires a third component: morality, concern for the good of others, an active commitment to justice and compassion, a willingness to ask not only what is right and good for me but also what is right and good for all of us - together... We are now experiencing the cultural equivalent of climate change. Only if we recognize this will we understand the strange things happening in the 21st century in the fields of politics and economics, the deterioration of public standards of truth and discourse, and the threat to freedom of speech in universities in Britain and America. This change is also the foundation of more personal phenomena such as loneliness, depression and drug use. All these things are related to each other. Identifying the problem is the first step to solving it.
